Delivery Terms

Delivery Terms & Incoterms Explained

With EXW, the buyer takes responsibility for arranging transportation from the agreed collection point. This option can suit buyers who prefer to manage freight and logistics independently.

Under FOB, the seller coordinates delivery to the designated port and loading onto the vessel according to the agreed terms. The buyer generally takes responsibility for the main ocean freight and subsequent costs and risks as defined by the applicable Incoterms® rules.

With CIF, the seller arranges the main ocean freight and insurance to the named destination port, subject to the applicable Incoterms® rules. This can provide buyers with a more coordinated shipping arrangement while the buyer remains responsible for certain costs and processes after the relevant delivery point.

With DAP, the seller arranges transportation to the named destination, with delivery taking place when the goods are made available to the buyer at the agreed location, ready for unloading. Import clearance, duties and taxes are generally the buyer’s responsibility under the applicable Incoterms® rules.

Incoterms help establish where costs and responsibilities transfer between the seller and buyer. The exact allocation depends on the selected Incoterm and named place or port.

When preparing a quotation, we consider factors such as:

  • Product quantity
  • Packaging or bulk shipment requirements
  • Destination
  • Port or delivery location
  • Freight arrangements
  • Insurance requirements
  • Customs and import requirements
  • Agreed Incoterm

We discuss delivery requirements with customers before confirming an order so that the commercial terms, logistics arrangements and responsibilities are clearly understood.
